Alexander Stöckl beendete seinen aktive Karriere bereits im Alter von 22 Jahren und wurde schon ein Jahr später Co-Trainer der österreichischen Nationalmannschaft, wo er zuerst mit Andreas Felder und dann mit Mika Kojonkoski zusammenarbeitete.
Danach folgten einige Jahre als Nachwuchstrainer in Österreich, bevor er im März 2011 die Herausforderung annahm die Norwegische Nationalmannschaft als Cheftrainer zu betreuen.
