Als der japanische Biologe Natsumi Kanzaki und sein deutscher Kollege Matthias Herrmann in einem Eichenwald in der Provinz Fukushima einen Hirschkäfer aufsammelten, ahnten sie noch nicht, welche Überraschung das imposante Insekt verbarg: Denn am Körper des Käfers versteckte sich ein mikroskopisch kleiner Fadenwurm, der den Zoologen bisher gänzlich unbekannt war.
Die Neuentdeckung bekam den offiziellen Namen Pristionchus maxplancki, zu Ehren des theoretischen Physikers Max Planck ( 1858 – 1947 ).

When Japanese biologist Natsumi Kanzaki and his German colleague Matthias Herrmann collected a stag beetle from an oak forest in Fukushima province, they had no idea at the time about the surprise the impressive insect concealed: a microscopic threadworm, completely unknown to the zoologists until then, was hidden on the beetle ’ s body.
The official name Pristionchus maxplancki was bestowed on the new discovery in honour of theoretical physicist Max Planck ( 1858 – 1947 ).

Das Umweltbildungszentrum Listhof verfolgte mit diesem Projekt das Ziel, die bedrohten Käferarten Alpenbock und Hirschkäfer in ihren Verbreitungsgebieten im Biosphärenreservat Schwäbische Alb und im Naturschutzgebiet Listhof dauerhaft zu erhalten.
Dazu wurden gemeinsam mit Schülern Umbaumaßnahmen im Wald durchgeführt und die Fundorte der Käfer per GPS erfasst.

Die Anpflanzung von Eichen kommt in Zukunft auch dem Hirschkäfer, dem Mittelspecht und weiteren Tierarten, die eng an diesen Lebensraum gebunden sind, zugute.

Während dieser Zeit frisst sie sich durch das vermodernde Holz von Wurzelstöcken oder Baumstümpfen, vor allem von Eichen.

The larvae of the stag beetle needs 5 to 8 years to develop into an adult beetle.
