Es war schon seinerzeit ( in den frühen vierziger Jahren ) bekannt, daß sie im Stoffwechsel der Zellen aus Vorstufen entsteht, zu denen Anthranilsäure, Indol und Serin zählen.
Die genetische Feinanalyse ergab, daß einige der Tryptophanmangelmutanten ( tryptophanauxotrophe Mutanten ) auch nach Zugabe von einem der Zwischenprodukte wuchsen.
