Die Anencephalie stellt eine spezielle Art der Spina bifida dar.
Sie entsteht, wenn die Fusion im kranialen Bereich des Neuralrohres unterblieben ist.

It arises when the neural folds do not fuse in the cranial region of the neural tube.

Wenn hingegen der Schluss des Neuroporus anterior ausbleibt, so kommt es zu einer Anencephalie.
Während sich das Neuralrohr schliesst, lösen sich Zellen an den lateralen Seiten der Neuralplatte und bilden die Neuralleiste.
