Aufgewachsen als eines von vier Kindern, hat er seine Kindheit damit verbracht, in der Kirche zu singen und der Musik von Soulkünstlern wie James Brown, The Temptations, Eddie Floyd, Otis Redding und dem klassischen Memphis Sound der 1960er Jahre zu lauschen.
Bereits Ende der 1960er Jahre begann er seine eigene Karriere als Sänger und hat u.a. mit Bands wie Kool and the Gang, Sammy Gordon and the Hip-Huggers und Little Royal zusammengearbeitet.
Er gilt als der bekannteste Unbekannte im Soul und Funk.
